There are few things in life that bring as much joy as a new puppy. But raising an adorable puppy into a happy, healthy and well-behaved dog is a lot of work. Luckily, you’ve already taken a very important step: Researching! We’re here to help – with the supplies and know-how you need to succeed.
The Basics: Get Prepped!
It’s best to shop for much of the essentials before your new puppy arrives. That way when he or she comes home, you can concentrate on getting to know each other and settling into your new life together.
Every dog & puppy has unique nutritional needs. Talk with a Pet Expert about what food works best for your new pet.
Treats are great incentives when training but can also clean teeth, and contribute to healthy digestion.
Your new dog’s bed should be soft, warm, and in a quiet area. Young puppies often cry when alone and can be comforted by a hot water bottle as it reminds them of their mom. Choose a washable bed and try pet specific stain and odour removers.
Dogs & puppies need lots of exercise. Walking a puppy also helps socialize him with the outdoor environment, and burn off energy. Always use a leash!
Give your dog durable chew toys. Not only will they entertain him, they will also help clean and massage his teeth and gums. Toys also help discourage puppies from chewing things they aren’t supposed to!
Groom your dog regularly by cutting his nails, brushing his coat, and giving him a bath (puppies included)! For puppies, use a mild shampoo and a gentle brush. Use a flea and tick product only after your puppy is 8 weeks old and at the recommendation of your Veterinarian.
There are two house training methods, “training pad” or “crate training”. Make sure you choose the right one for you and your puppy. No matter what, accidents will happen.
